Cheap Texas Motorcycle Insurance Coverage

Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability for Texas motorcycle insurance covers your legal liability for a covered accident that results in injury to other people or in damage to someone's property, up to the limit of liability per policy.

Because motorcycles are treated the same as passenger cars in Texas for insurance purposes, the minimum requirements for motorcycle insurance limits are 30/60/25 in Texas. This means motorcycle riders and those travelers who want to drive in Texas legally, must have liability coverage in at least the following amounts:

  • $30,000 for bodily injury coverage for one person in an accident

  • $60,000 for bodily injury coverage total per incident

  • $25,000 for property damage coverage per each accident

All motorcycles and their riders in the state of Texas are required to show proof of financial responsibility for any accidents they may cause or if they are asked by authorized state agents such as a police officer. This means motorcycle riders in Texas must carry at least a Texas minimum liability motorcycle insurance.

Motorcycles and their insurance requirements are a bit different than passenger cars in Texas. Although majority of drivers in the state are required to prove their financial responsibility by purchasing an auto liability policy, motorcycle riders and owners can use the following alternatives accepted by the state as proof of financial responsibility.

  • A vehicle liability insurance policy through a state-licensed insurance provider.

  • A surety bond that includes two people, both of whom own real property in Texas on file with your county clerk.

  • A cash or securities deposit of $55,000 made to your county comptroller.

  • A cash or cashier’s check deposit of $55,000 made to your county judge.

  • A certification of self-insurance through the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). This option is typically only available to dealers, as it is only open to those who own more than 25 vehicles.

Texas Motorcycle Insurance: Texas Financial Responsibility Law & Motorcycles

We're Here, & We'd Love to Help!

Texas defines a motorcycle very narrowly and specifically in its laws and regulations pertaining to motorcycle insurance. The following are vehicles considered of the same family but are treated differently for insurance purposes:

  • A Motorcycle is a motorized vehicle with a saddle for at least one rider and operating on a maximum of three wheels. This excludes tractors. Under Texas law and with this definition, motorcycles are considered the same as passenger vehicles for insurance purposes.

  • A Moped is defined as a motorized cycle that can not operate faster than 30 mph, produces less than 2 hp, and offers less than 50 cc displacement.

  • A Motor-driven cycle is any motorcycle with an engine displacement of less than 250 cc.

Texas Motorcycle Insurance: What Is Exactly A Motorcycle, Legally?

Texas helmet requirements are not affected by how much Texas auto or motorcycle insurance you have. However, they are somewhat affected by your health insurance policy at the moment. The bottom line is, if you ride a motorcycle (as driver or passenger) in the state of Texas, you must wear a helmet according to the state law, unless:

  • You are 21 years of age or older, AND

  • You have done at least one of the following:

  1. Completed an authorized motorcycle training and safety course, OR

  2. Your health insurance covers at least $10,000 of any potential injuries you might get while not wearing a helmet and riding a motorcycle in Texas.

How Texas Motorcycle Insurance Coverage Affects Helmet Requirements

Texas reserves the right to suspend your driver’s license and vehicle registration when your Texas motorcycle insurance lapses regardless of reason or excuse.

Once you receive a state suspension notice, you must decide within 20 days whether you're going to appeal, which could temporarily stop suspension procedures until the matter is resolved legally. You can contact TxDOT about your decision to appeal by reaching to them at the address or phone number printed on your suspension notice.

If your license and registration are suspended a second time for lack of motorcycle insurance in Texas, your vehicle will be impounded for 180 days. Furthermore, state of Texas will impose a $15 daily fee for each day of your vehicle impoundment.

Such suspensions can be lifted if you:

  • Provide proof of current motorcycle insurance liability coverage

  • Pay state reinstatement fees from $175 to $350

How Texas Motorcycle Insurance Treats Motorcycles 25 Years and Older?

Many Texans enjoy their vintage and classic or even collectible motorcycles which allow them to preserve the past and enjoy the classic rides from the time of their glory. For these 25 years old or older bikes, Agreed Value coverage is the insurance to choose in Texas

Agreed Value In Texas and for motorcycle insurance, the agreed value option means the lower of the following will be used to settle a total loss:

  • The amount necessary to repair or replace the stolen or damaged property to its pre-loss condition, reduced by the applicable deductible.

  • The agreed value written on your policy’s Declarations page, after its salvage value is deducted, if you retain

  • ownership of the motorcycle. No deductible applies in the event of a total loss with this coverage.

  • The agreed value, which you provide and the insurance company confirms, is the market value of the motorcycle at the time of application and includes the market value of all custom parts and equipment added. The agreed value should be updated on your policy if you make any changes to your motorcycle.

  • The agreed value settlement option must apply to the following:

    • Motorcycles whose manufacturers are listed, but have no resale values listed in the NADA Appraisal Guide.

    • Motorcycles 25 years old and older.

Texas Motorcycle Comprehensive and Collision coverage is available on most motorcycles as well as on all ATVs.
